Penner/Brakefield Garden August 4, 2007

Michele Penner and Tom Brakefield garden on an acreage backing up to BLM land southeast of Bend, Oregon. Outside their deer fence they've created an expansive wildflower meadow which receives only minimal irrigation. Inside the fence there are several separate garden areas, including a stream and pond garden that incorporates the irrigation ditch from which they draw their garden water. Their soil is thin and rocky and frost can come any month of the year.
